How we chose the TOEFL iBT words
Inoh’s own selection
The TOEFL iBT collection is Inoh’s own selection of about 1,400 words and expressions for the current test, which has used its new format since January 2026. It is not an official ETS word list, and it is not endorsed by ETS.
- Words from the lecture and reading fields the test keeps returning to, such as astronomy, geology, biology, history and the arts.
- Campus-life words for conversations and announcements, such as registrar, prerequisite and office hours.
- Everyday words for the new tasks, such as Read in Daily Life and Write an Email: notices, invoices, reservations and service conversations.
- Spoken idioms and phrasal verbs, which the listening section tests.
What we used
We chose words using the task descriptions ETS publishes for the 2026 test, and checked our coverage against published TOEFL word books. We did not copy any book’s definitions, examples, order or grouping. Every definition and example sentence in the collection is written by Inoh.
